I have to confess that when I would encounter what you're describing, one team solidly packed with Gen10s while stuck in a team of various newbies on the other side, sometimes I would join, wait for the timer to tick down to about 5 seconds and then leave, wait, rejoin, the clock starts over at 30. I'd do this like 5 or 6 times in a row just to screw with the clanned up people. Petty, I know, but I wanted them to realize what they were doing: i.e, destroying the fun.

I applaud you for going back and trying TF1 to refresh your memory and then giving this pretty thorough analysis. Bravo for that. I mostly agree with your assessment. I actually preferred the older menus better, but you are right that it is better to be able to edit your loadouts anytime.

My main disagreement is with #2 and the latter half of #3. As far as the first part of #3, I've had to laugh at myself many time for trying to slide in TF1 as well. :)

My main disagreement is about the overall speed:
Titans: All titans are much faster in TF1.
Pilots: I do agree that the Stim is better and awesome and perhaps even wallrunning or any movement while in the air may be faster in TF2. However, if you do not know how to bunnyhop in TF1 or slidehop inTF2, which I do not, then the ground movement in TF2 is what feels like molasses. It is the only piece they refused to give in on when they had to increase all the speeds after the outcry during the tech test. If you are flying through the air in TF2 it can be amazing and feel better than TF1, as you say, however, if you touch the ground for even a split second, it is like slamming on the breaks. It was different in TF1, because you would maintain most of your momentum even when touching the ground.

I'm with you 1000% on missing the old titans, the old rodeo mechanic and the old maps.

Yes, most of the maps from TF1 were beautifully designed works of art, both in aesthetics and functionality. You could tell it was a labor of love for those who created them. The TF2 maps leave a lot to be desired.

Yes, this is really a shame, especially on the PC, because we are only a little over 3 months into this thing and most lobbies excepty Attrition are dead. The only mode I enjoy is Amped Hardpoint and it is almost impossible to find a game on the PC.

Good for you for doing that. And thank you for doing that! They deserved anything like that you could do to them, because they were just stubborn and would sit there and ruin the game for everyone else.

Also, I want to give props to the TF2 maps EDEN and DRY DOCK. Those two seem to play well. I find CRASH SITE and the Corporate (?) one to be too frustrating, although if people just started that map and ran away from the skirmish line it would be more fun. EXOPLANET is kind of in the middle for me. I hate FORWARD BASE. BOOMTOWN I do well on but I think it's an ugly map and feels half-finished. Like CRASH SHITE (see what I did there?) it fully depends which side of the skirmish line you start on for how well your team will do, which is lame.

Yeah, Eden and Dry Dock are decent maps. I also like Exoplanet, Forward Base Kodai, Boomtown and Black Water Canal and Homestead. But Crash Site and Complex never should have made it out of the concept phase. They are horrendous, pathetic pieces of garbage.

However, even the good maps in TF2 do not even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence or exist in the same universe as even the worst TF1 maps. The TF1 maps were so blatantly obviously labors of love that were thoroughly and completely well designed and beautiful works of art both aesthetically and functionally.

I only like the first 2 of those maps. The others seem more like paintball maps, like you'd find in real life, with a meeting point between two sides and a few obstacles to run to and try to control, and whoever gets there first wins. I think one element missing (among many, let's say) is that these new maps are too short. I'm gonna start crying if I think about Dig Site or Sand Trap. :( Why , why, why couldn't they have just built on what they had, give us the same old maps plus some new toys and new mechanics?!

Someone earlier mentioned they had about 1/2 of their games end at near parity and half end lopsided (for or against). Lately almost every game I play in ends up lopsided, winning or losing by 150 to 250 points. I would say out of every 20 games I will have 1 or 2 where it's a squeaker decided right at the end.

Also, today I had the best kill I've ever had in a Titanfall game. I had just ejected from a Titan on Exoplanet, and I looked down and saw an enemy pilot on top of a building. I had grappling enabled so I shot the grappling hook trying to hit behind the pilot so I could reel myself in and execute him. Instead, while still going up, I grappled into the pilot and yanked him up in the air with me, punch-killed him the air and then came down. It was hilarious.

I've noticed something recently with regards to matchmaking on TF2. If I do really well on a map, like if I finish first on my team, on the very next map the latency/lag/ping is awful. It's like it takes the "best" players from one map and assigns them the worst connection in the following map. I've never done great in two successive maps. I'll notice it because in the 2nd map I will get smoked like 5 or 6 times in a row without getting a single kill. And then I quit the game and find a new match, and then I'm back to smoking fools in that game.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

With all the supplement solicitation taking up the top slots as well as the focus shifting to looking forward to TF3 now, just wanted to revive some potentially applicable threads that might warrant more discussion at this time.

I still think there has to be a commitment to creating and implementing a rock solid matchmaking algroithm.

There is never going to be a rock solid matchmaking algorithm with current ISPs at least and I'd MUCH rather played against a team of people on a good ping than just all singles on a shitty ping.

I much prefer matchmaking by ping than matchmaking by skill.

    Thanks for the feedback Ik0n.

Yeah, I see your point. It would help a lot to be matched with good ping players. I still believe skill based matchmaking is not that difficult. They just have to decide to want to do it.

I am the cold water pourer I feel. Or I just love TF2 too much.

I'm quite happy with it all. Sometimes I get my ass kicked. Sometimes I kick everyone elses. I've gone me against 6 a few times and just had fun being a cockroach to them. It's gotta be random or it defeats the purpose surely.

If they were to stack the matchmaking in any form or fashion there would be no competition surely?.

Thanks for the feedback Rott. I just disagree with this:
If it is done right, I believe it allows for the best competition that everyone could enjoy.

I don't even mind losing if I felt it was an honest, even, well fought game. That's all I'm looking for.

Just to be clear for anyone who reads this, let me clarify what I mean when I say develop a rock solid matchmaking algorithm. I will use just Generations in the following examples, but truly, behind the scenes, the math would be looking at multiple things like (Generation, Time Played, # Wins in Last 10 Games Of The Current Game Mode, etc.). For sake of example, I am just going to use Generation numbers though.

Please understand that I am not saying that if you are a Gen 10 that you would only ever get to play against other Gen 10s. That is not what I want at all. What I am saying is that when people enter a game mode, they are put in a temporary holding area and from there they are distributed evenly into a game.

For example, let's say you have a stream of players entering the mode in this order:
    10, 10, 10, 10, 9,9,1,1,1,1,2,2

I am not going to make a game like both Titanfalls do where the teams would look like this:
    10,10,10,10,9,9
    against
    1,1,1,1,2,2

Instead, my matchmaking algorithm would assemble the teams like this:
    10,10,9,1,1,2
    against
    10,10,9,1,1,2

That is all I am looking for it to do. Just give me an even game.

What if that second example is gonna give you a 200ms ping and the first example is gonna give you a 50ms ping, what would you rather have?

I'll always take the second one. All I want is a fair game where I have a chance to win. Not interested in being steamrolled or streamrolling at any speed.

Ehh... I feel like it's more fair and I have a better chance to win with a better connection. To each their own I guess. I like playing against full teams though.. so maybe that plays a factor as well.

Yeah, don't get me wrong Ik0n, I am by no means trying to suggest that you are wrong. It is definitely much more enjoyable to play with a better connection, so I can certainly understand why you would prefer that. I'm just saying that I personally would choose an even game over a faster game if I was forced to choose, because I get no enjoyment out of playing a game I have no chance of winning or where it is not challenging because the other team has no chance of winning.

Matchmaking in TF2 has been solid for me. I've had a LOT of matches of Attrition finish with a single digit spread. Edge of my seat action I'm tellin' ya! I have noticed that even though the player count is higher lately on Xbox one, the wait times are noticeably longer and then it puts me into a game where I have a steady 120ms ping when normally I have had a 60ms ping in game. Occasionally I get the normal 60ms game but then the next few games are 120ms. Am I being placed in a match on a distant server? My ping on the title screen is normally 48-53. Playing a different game, like NHL18, I normally get 28-33ms ping. I'm in the camp where I want the best ping and I'll take my chances with who I'm up against.
