A game based on the Friday The 13th horror film franchise is currently in development, according to its creator Sean S Cunningham.

Speaking to EGM, Cunningham revealed that an as-yet secret studio is working on the game, set to coincide with an upcoming Friday The 13th TV series and movie.

According to Cunningham, the game will be an asymmetrical co-op and competitive multiplayer game, in which a small group of players have to work together in order to avoid being caught and killed by the immortal Jason Voorhees, played by another player.

As well as incorporating lore from the previous films in the series (of which there have been twelve to date), the game will also borrow elements from the upcoming television series.

"With a new television series on the horizon and plans announced for the thirteenth installment of the film franchise, we felt the timing was right to finally explore Jason, Camp Crystal Lake, and the rest of the Friday the 13th story in interactive form," Cunningham explained.

"We have some exciting new ideas for a game that supplies plenty of replay value, while delivering the kinds of thrills and scares that fans of the franchise have come to expect."

The game's developer has yet to be announced, but Cunningham has stated that it's an "experienced" studio and will be announced in a matter of weeks.

The last officially licensed Friday The 13th game was released way back in 1989 for the NES, so fans of the series have been waiting over 25 years for another.

Friday The 13th: The Video Game is due for release on multiple formats in October 2015.
